AUSTRALIA Most stocks move down
m ayuney Australian sharemarkets closed easier, with negative news from overseas combined with profit-taking in leading stocks, pushing the market down, brokers said. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index had fallen 9.3 points to 1059.8, the all industrials index 5.2 points to 1565.1 and the all resources index 12.0 points to 669.7. The gold index dropped 14.1 points to 973.5. Turnover was 52.8 M shares worth 582.2 M, with falls outnumbering rises, by 273 to 183.
Brokers said the market had held up remarkably well recently in the face of negative overseas news and was overdue for a sizeable fall as profit-takers moved in. BHP led the market down, falling 18c to close at 892 after reaching a low of 884. Among other market leaders, CSR dropped 10c to 365, Bell Resources shed 26c to 620 while its parent company, Bell Group, lost 24c to 730.
The mining sector was hardest, with CRA losing 10c to 580, MIM 7c to 305, Western Mining the same to 365 and Peko Wallsend 6c to 564. North Broken Hill continued to be keenly sought and dropped 6c to 275 on a turnover of 1.6 M.
A gold-miner, GMK, shed 50c to 880, while Central Norsemarn fell 30c to 720. The oil and gas sector continued to make only slight losses despite the dramatic falls in world crude prices. Santos lost 2c to 530, Magellan 2c to 218 and Peko Oil 1c to 75. A . -
