Drivers excel in battle for spoils
There was excellent racing in the second round of the Phillip Mills-Radio Avon $lO,OOO midget car series, raced at the Handy Hire Centre international speedway, Ruapuna, on Wednesday evening, as all cars were chasing points and money. The Aucklander, Ted Tracey, extended his lead in the series after eighth of the twelve heats with the final four heats to be run on Saturday evening. Tracey now has 69 points out of a possible 80.
The American Larry Rice, showed his world class by collecting a win and three seconds from the four heats as well as setting a new lap record of 16.3 s in the opening heat, and now is in second place over all with 60 points.
Brett Horrobin, of Auckland, who was in second place after the opening round slipped back to third after finishing in sixth place, his worst result, in the eighth heat
Te Awamutu’s Grant Wilks is next on the points table, five points behind Horrobin. After rolling his car in the sixth heat, he restarted, and did well to finish in fourth place. Auckland’s Lance Johnson and Christchurch’s Mark Williams and Selwyn Everett follow the top four in over-all positions. The Australian champion, Jimmy Holden, was unlucky to roll his car in spectacular fashion, rolling over several rivals before landing upside down on the track in the first race of the night and took no further part in the meeting.
