Shipping news Russian trawler sails

A Russian fishing trawler the Ivan Malyakin sailed yesterday after divers had checked a propeller problem. She arrived at Lyttelton for bunkering and provisions on Wednesday after a 25-day voyage from Russia. According to the Russian fisheries officer at Lyttelton, Mr Yuri Sokolov, the master had reported problems with the vessel shaking when she reached high speeds during the trip. He was concerned there was something wrong with the propeller.

Mr Sokolov said divers examined the ship when it arrived in port, but they could find nothing wrong with the propeller. The Ivan Malyakin sailed to fishing grounds at sea yesterday. A second Russian ship the Pirit is expected to be back in the water today after a sixday spell in dry dock. She had been in the dry dock for maintenance and survey work and repairs to the tailshaft

At present the Russian trawlers are waiting for the squid season to start in the Auckland Islands, south of Stewart Island. Usually the squid travel down the west coast of the country and reach the foreign licence fishing grounds in the south in January. Mr Sokolov said the season was late starting this year. He did not know when the squid would arrive, but predicted it would be in the next few weeks. Apart from boats working under charter vessel agreements, all squid caught by the Russian trawlers will be processed on board and transferred to a mother vessel for transport back to Russia.
