New Maralinga inquiry
NZPA-AAP London The question of British Government liability for the multimillion dollar clean-up of British nuclear test sites in Australia will be shelved while a new inquiry is conducted. The Australian and British Governments have agreed to set up a technical assessment group, which , will determine the cost and best method of removing nuclear debris left after the tests in the 1950 s and ’6os.
This was negotiated during two days of discussions in London between the Australian Resources and Energy Minister, Senator Gareth Evans, and British Ministers.
Although agreeing to the new technical assessment, the British Government has remained adamant that it is still to be convinced of any legal or moral responsibility for the clean-up. It is the first official British response to the Australian Royal Commission’s inquiry into the nuclear tests, which recommended that the British should pay for a new clean-up, particularly at Maralinga and Emu, in South Australia. The group will consist of two Australian scientists, an American decontamination expert, and two British experts,
