P.O. invests in Pacific cable
PA Wellington The Post Office will invest $1 million to become a small co-owner of a new Pacific submarine telephone cable system, says the Postmaster-Gen-eral, Mr Hunt. A construction and maintenance agreement would be signed in Hawaii later this month, he said.
“One million dollars only represents a tiny percentage of the total cost of the cable system, estimated to be SUS6O2 million,” Mr Hunt said. Investment in the system would give New Zealand the equivalent of 150 circuits between Hawaii and the United States and up to 20 circuits between Hawaii and Japan/Guam. “The new system will stretch from Point Arena on the west coast of the United States to Hawaii and then across the Pacific to Guam and Japan,” Mr Hunt said. He said New Zealand
telephone circuits would interconnect with the system at Hawaii via the existing ANZCAN cable system. Mr Hunt said the two largest owners would be the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (56 per cent) and Koskushi Denshi Denwa, Ltd, of Japan (22 per cent). “The New Zealand Post Office is one of 20 other partners from eight countries,” Mr Hunt said.
He said the new cable would be ready for service by the end of 1988.
