Mares could get back into cup records tomorrow

From J. J. BOYLE Wellington The records are against a win for a mare in the Wellington Cup tomorrow, but as someone observed long ago, horses don’t read record books. At least three of the females in the field for the last of the season’s major cup races tomorrow have credentials to invite the opinion that the 26-year gap to the last successful mare in the race is about to be closed this time.

Geldings and entires have had an unbroken run of successes since Jalma beat some talented stayers, including Great Sensation, in 1960. But there will be no long odds offered about Duanette’s Girl, Amloch, and Curved Air when they attempt the break-through this time.

The American-owned Duanette’s Girl has the highest weight rating of the trip with 55.5. She ran third in this race last year when the footing was all against her, and this summer she has come right back into the boom by running second in the Auckland Cup and winning the Trentham Stakes. The footing became too tricky for Duanette’s Girl in last year’s race when rain arrived to deteriorate a track that had been havily watered.

The Balmerino mare’s Matamata trainer, Jim Gibbs, was not cheered yesterday by a forecast of rain today, but quipped that he would be quick to snip the hose if the club continued watering the track too close to race day.

Amloch is also from Matamata and this stoutly bred Amyntor mare is in the right form to redeem herself for an expensive failure in the Auckland Cup.

That race was something of a jockey’s nightmare for several who hoped for early positions behind the middle of the field. Because of an absence of a true pace early there was much shuffling for positions, and Amloch was caught up in it, to become hopelessly placed.

Evidence that the Auckland Cup run might be best forgotten appeared to be offered by Amloch when she finished third in the weight-for-age Trentham Stakes last Saturday.

She was less than a length from the winner, Duanette’s Girl, with a performance that left her rider, Grant Cooksley, completely satisfied as a cup trial. Curved Air, a Hasty Cloud mare also from the Waikato, has been admirably consistent in her racing from the Laxon stable. She was a battling

second behind Twelve Gauge over 2200 m at Trentham on Monday and luckless in the running when second behind Gold Lomond at Avondale the time before.

She goes into the Wellington Cup receiving weight from those two recent conquerors and must be regarded as one of the brighter chances in the lower half of the handicap.

Kiwi and Secured Deposit, top weights with 57, carried 50.5 and 51.5 respectively in their previous victories in this ace.

Secured Deposit returned to Trentham to run second in last year’s cup with 57, that following his Auckland Cup victory. His chances of landing a second Auckland Cup this year faded with the absence of a true pace but the replacement rider, Peter Tims, could be under instructions tomorrow to make demands on the Kirrama gelding’s great store of stamina early if nothing else emerges to make it a good gallop.

Kiwi could have the same problems as Secured Deposit if it becomes a stop-go affair. But unlike Secured Deposit, Kiwi will probably embark on the last 800 m at the tail of the field, and if one or more near the

lead manage to run that sector in close to 46, Snow Lupton’s famous stayer might be denied the role of a successful cloud dropper.

Riccarton’s Samasaan, as winner of this season’s New Zealand Cup, attempts one of the most difficult of doubles, but one achieved as recently as 1981 by Koiro Trelay.

Samasaan came through his lead-up race with much credit, finishing fourth in the weight-for-age Trentham Stakes after being pushed on to the running rail when he got into cramped quarters.

Samasaan has 54, so has Twelve Gauge, which at four years, is one of the youngest in the field but could well complete a hattrick for stayers of that age, lengthening the sequence from Secured Deposit and Imaprince. Twelve Gauge’s astute Levin trainer, Walter McEwan, believes the gelding could be even better next year, but has diligently sought a start in at least one of this summer’s big cups, obviously confident he is mature enough for such a test. Twelve Gauge won handily over 2200 m at Trentham last Monday, showing steady mastery of the situation even though his rider, Tony Allan, feared he had struck the

front a shade early.

The McEwan skills in bringing a horse to its peak should assure wouldbe backers of Twelve Gauge that their hopeful will be at the sharpest edge of fitness for this toughest test yet.

Fort Cheval and Gold Lomond are other laststart winners, running for Waikato stables bearing confidence in their ability to master the cup distance. Fort Cheval battled ably for his fourth in the Auckland Cup then returned to a middle distance to win at Awapuni.

Gold Lomond has improved with each recent race for the Cambridge stable of John Winder and the chestnut goes into the race right at his peak after a rewarding lead-up middle distance programme.
