Pen portraits of the players in the New Zealand and Australian teams for the match tomorrow.— NEW ZEALAND Lesley Murdoch (Canterbury, captain): Righthand opening bat; good fielder. A double international, having foregone New Zealand’s cricket tour of England in 1984 to compete in hockey at the Los Angeles Olympics. Unavailable for New Zealand’s tour of India last year and the Shell Rosebowl series. Last played for New Zealand at the 1982 World Cup. Aged 29, housewife.
Debbie Hockley (North Shore): New Zealand’s vice-captain and a past captain of the national team. An aggressive righthand bat who had an excellent Hansells tournament this season, scoring more runs than any other player. Close fielder and right-arm slow bowler. Captained New Zealand on tours of England in 1984, India last year and during last year’s Shell Rosebowl series. Has been a member of New Zealand teams since she was 16. Aged 23, telephone clerk.
Ingrid Jagersma (North Shore): Wicket-keeper, right-hand middle order bat. Toured England 1984 and India 1985 and played in the Shell Rosebowl last year. Was voted player of the series during the English tour. Aged 26, physical education teacher.
Jacqueline Clark (Central Districts): Left-hand opening bat, solid and stylish. Excellent fielder, specialising at point. Right-arm medium-fast bowler. Made a century at the Hansells Cup tournament and was second to Hockley in runs scored. Aged 23, laboratory technician.
Elizabeth Signal (Central Districts): Right-arm medium-pace bowler and sound fielder. Signal was the second-highest wickettaker at the Hansells Cup. Has served her apprenticeship in New Zealand age-grade teams at under 19, under 23 and under 25 level. Toured England and India with New Zealand and played in the Shell Rosebowl last season. Aged 23, clerk. Sue Rattray (North Shore); Right hand bat, stylish and aggressive. Shifted to Auckland last year after being a member of the successful Canterbury team for several seasons. Fields well and bowls some right-arm
spin. Toured England and India and played in last year’s Shell Rosebowl. Aged 32, teacher. Linda Fraser (North Shore): Another double international, representing New Zealand in cricket and softball. Left-arm medium-fast bowler, lower order bat. Shifted to Auckland from Wellington last year. Represented New Zealand at cricket’s World Cup in 1982 and in England in 1984. Dropped for the tour of India but fought back with the third highest tally of wickets at this year’s Hansells tournament. Aged 32, legal officer. Jeanette Dunning (North Shore): Right arm off-spinner who captained North Shore at the Hansells tournament this year. Aggressive middle-order bat and sound fielder. Aged 28, teacher. Sue Brown (Canterbury): Right-arm swing bowler, right-hand bat. Another fresh from an excellent Hansells tournament where she took more wickets than any other bowler. Played in the New Zealand World Cup team in 1982, toured England and India and took part in the Shell Rosebowl last year. Aged 27, housewife. Nichola Turner (Canterbury): Right-hand bat and the New Zealand Women’s Cricket Council’s director of coaching. A regular member of New Zealand teams from the 1982 World Cup until she was dropped for the tour of India last year. Returns after good performances this season. Aged 26, cricket coach.
Nancy Williams (Wellington): Right-arm offspinner who first represented New Zealand at under 25 level. Toured India last year and Australia for the Shell Rosebowl series. Shifted to Wellington from Canterbury this season. Aged 26, post office clerk. Karen Gunn (Canterbury): Reserve wicketkeeper, a strong bat and good outfielder. New Zealand’s cricketer of the year, Gunn is very versatile and was a success on the national team’s tour of India. Medium-pace bowler. Aged 23, clerk. AUSTRALIA Lyn Larson (New South Wales, captain): Right arm slow bowler, middle order bat; represented Australia against India, 1984 and England and New Zealand last year. Aged 22, teacher with the Department of Sport and Recreation.
Lynette Fullston (South Australia): Left-arm slow bowler, left hand bat; represented Australia in the World Cup in New Zealand in 1982, toured India in 1983; played against England in jubilee test, 1984. State under age netball coach. Aged 28, physical education teacher. Denise Annetts (N.S.W.): Right hand top order bat. Represented Australia against New Zealand in 1985, state hockey representative. Aged 21, pharmacy student.
Ruth Buckstein (Victoria): Right hand opening bat, new cap, state softball representative. Orchardist.
Karen Brown (Victoria): Right arm bowler, middle order bat. New cap. Aged 23. Belinda Haggett (N.S.W.): Right hand top order bat, right arm medium-pace bowler. New cap. State softball representative, marathon runner. Aged 23, physical education teacher.
Sharlene Heywood (Victoria): Right hand bat, right arm off-spin bowler. New cap. Secretary. Frances Leonard (West Australia): Opening bowler, lower order bat. New Cap. Represented Australian Capital Territory at cricket when aged 13. Aged 21. Chris Matthews (Victoria): Wicket-keeper and right hand bat; represented Australia against India in 1983 and England in 1984-85. Aged 26, secretary. Karen Price (N.S.W.): Right arm medium-fast bowler, right hand middle order bat; played against New Zealand 1975 and 1985; against West Indies 1976; against England in 1976 and 1985, against India 1984. State hockey representative. Aged 30, cricket coach. Karen Read (West Australia): Top order right hand bat, represented Australia in the World Cup in New Zealand, 1982; against India in 1984 and England in 1985; played in the Rosebowl series last year. Aged 26. Lindsay Reeler (N.S.W.): Right hand opening bat, represented Australia against India in 1984 and England 1985. State hockey representative. Aged 24, physical education teacher.
