Old Man’s Beard

Sir, — A small error in your gardening, section on January 17 could add confusion to the anxiety about Clematis vitalba as a weed. C. vitalba is not seeding at this time of year, as stated, but is covered in small, creamy white flowers. The prominent, shaggy seeding heads appear much later in the summer and on into winter. Other clematis <

species, such as C. foetida and C. paniculata, are seeding now. These are native and generally desirable, and it would be a pity to have them confused with C. vitalba in any campaign of eradication. — Yours, etc., HUGH WILSON. January 20, 1986.
