Tino Rossi dies

NZPA-Reuter Paris The French singer, Tino Rossi, who recorded 2000 songs and sold 200 million records, has died of cancer at his suburban Paris home. He was 76. France’s most popular singer from pre-war days, he was often referred to as “the most famous Corsican since Napoleon.” Earlier this year he underwent surgery at the American Hospital, Neuilly. A few weeks ago he fell ill again and returned to the American Hospital, where

he was’told he was dying. He died at his home at Neuilly, a Paris residential suburb. Rossi was born in Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica, on April 19, 1907, the third son of a tailor. He made his first record in Marseilles in 1933 when he was 26. but his real national debut dates from October, 1934. when he appeared at the Casino de Paris. His career extended through four generations, three French republics, and 10 French presidents.
