‘Coppelia’ on tour
1983 marks the thirtieth anniversary of The New Zealand Ballet, Australasia’s oldest professional dance company. The company plans to highlight its versatility, strength and depth of repertoire as well as pay tribute to pioneering individuals, both past and present, who helped establish the company. One of the most popular classical ballets of all time, “Coppelia,” will play an important role in this year’s activities. i Royal Highnesses, The z Prince and Princess of Wales, in Auckland. 1 It is this Royal Gala production that will play in four main South Island ’ centres during the last two ' weeks of July. The tour has ' been sponsored by Shell New Zealand Holding Company Limited. In Christchurch, on July r 29 and 30, the company will , perform at the Christ’s College theatre. It is the first > time a professional company has performed in the r- theatre, which was offered > when it was found that i other theatres were booked. “Coppela” is a new full
length production by the company’s artistic director, Harry Haythorne, based on traditional staging and choreography. All costumes have been designed by the New Zealand Ballet’s soloist dancer, Owen Anderson, and the set created by a leading Australian theatrical designer, Ken Rayner. In keeping with a New Zealand Ballet tradition, local artists in each centre visited will be featured in the ballet. Each performance of “Coppelia” will involve 30 local dance students who have been auditioned and selected from ballet schools throughout the region.
