University entrance
Sir,—At present the apparent major educational issue is whether secondary school students should attempt university entrance examinations in their sixth or seventh form years. This issue has particularly been highlighted by the secondary school principals’ annual meeting in the North Island. As a pupil in my sixth form year I have found university entrance a daunting but not impossible task and I find the teachers’ plea for university entrance to be delayed till the seventh form year as a somewhat naive proposition. In my opinion a one-year gap between school certificate and university entrance would cause many students to “go off the boil” and lose the examination technique developed during school certificate. While teachers highlight the jump between school certificate and university entrance and emphasise stress on students, people should realise that university entrance signifies the student’s readiness for such university ordeals. — Yours, etc.,
PETER ROBINSON. July 4, 1983.
