Actresses win settlement out of court
From DIANA DEKKER, in London Andrew Brown, the New Zealand producer of the television series, “Rock Follies,” Thames TV, and the show’s writer, Howard Schuman, are reportedly to pay £500,000 ($ll2 million) to the three actresses whom the British High Court ruled last year had inspired the show. The out-of-court settlement will conclude a sevenyear legal battle by the three women, who claimed to have been robbed of fame and fortune when their idea for the hit series, which was shown in New Zealand, was stolen.
The women are Gay Brown, aged 42, Annabel
Leventon, aged 41, and Diane Langton, aged 36. “Rock Follies” starred Rula Lenska, Julie Covington and Charlotte Cornwell. Andrew Brown and Howard Schuman, with Thames TV, are also to pay the £ 100,000 court costs. The settlement came three days before a scheduled High Court hearing to decide how much the four should be awarded. Mr Brown is in New York working on a Kennedy series. He is not expected back in London until midAugust. Late last year, after the High Court ruling, Mr Brown said that as far as he was concerned, “the truth transcends any sort of judgment.”
