Second ranking prelate chosen

NZPA-Reuter London A former university scientist, Dr John Habgood, was yesterday appointed Archbishop of York, the second-ranking prelate in the Anglican Church of England. The announcement came from the office of Mrs Margaret Thatcher, who has the final choice in senior appointments in the State-es-tablished religion. Dr Habgood, aged 56, and Bishop of Durham for the last 10 years, studied science at Cambridge University and worked as a pharmacologist for five years before entering the Church in 1955. He will succeed the present Archbishop, Dr Stuart Blanch, who retires next month after eight years in the job. York is England’s second-ranked see after Canterbury.
