Car destroyed in train accident
PA Hamilton A car was destroyed when it was struck by a goods train in Huntly early yesterday after the car’s elderly driver drove it on to the tracks. Sergeant Gerry Skinner said the Te Atatu man was dis-oriented when he drove into Huntly and drove his car on to the rail tracks about 1 a.m. He drove up the tracks, but became stuck and left
the car, Sergeant Skinner said. At 1.13 a.m. a north-bound goods train ploughed into the Ford Cortina car. The train driver blew his horn and hit his emergency brakes, but the train did not stop until it reached the other side of the Huntly station, Mr Skinner said. The police returned the elderly man to his Auckland home, his car having been destroyed in the accident.
