Bolivia given dairy products

NZPA staff correspondent Washington The United States will give surplus dairy products to Bolivia, its tenth such giveaway to other countries. The 54.4 tonnes of nonfat dry milk and 16.8 tonnes of butter oil will go to children under the age of six, pregnant and nursing mothers, the elderly, and the poor. New Zealand sells no dairy produce to Bolivia. New Zealand diplomats in Bolivia have made the point to the United States authorities, however, that they believe the programmes are disrupting commercial trade.

Even when New Zealand does not normally sell to a particular country, any gift is likely to free some supplies a competitor would have sold there and make them available on markets

where New Zealand is trying to sell dairy products, they argue. The Americans maintain that the gifts are going to people who could not otherwise afford dairy products, and are thus not affecting commercial sales.
