‘Weather hams’ at Auckland

Pet hamsters help the captain of a Polish ship berthed at Auckland forecast the weather, the “New Zealand Herald" has reported. Captain Honrad Szulc, of the Polish cargo ship Hel, says that if his pet hamsters fall asleep early in the evening he knows to prepare his ship for a storm at sea. “If they are running around my cabin in the evening, then I know that the weather will be fine for a while,” Captain Szulc said. “But many times I have changed course because the hamsters have been quiet and lazy and told me that there is a storm ahead.” When the Hel is at sea, Captain Szulc’s 33 hamsters usually have the run of his quarters. However, he believes there are only certain places in which the rodents can sleep safely, because they may be affected by “bad powers” within a certain area of a room. Captain Szulc says that in every home there are special places where it is undesirable tor a person or animal to spend much time. Many of his hamsters died after sleeping in an ill-chosen spot, but “they breed rapidly and the population never drops too much,” he said.
