Big following for Lewis
Thousands of Christchurch tennis fans were up in the early hours of yesterday to watch live television coverage of the Wimbledon tennis men’s singles final between New Zealand’s Chris Lewis and the American, John McEnroe, according to the Municipal Electricity Department. A spokesman for the
M.E.D. said that the figures for electricity use during the three-hour coverage showed that an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 households may have had their television sets on at the time.
The M.E.D. had to cut water-heating to consumers for about two hours on Saturday to cope with a
substantially higher than normal electricity load, caused by greater use of electric heating to counter cold temperatures. Other electric power supply authorities in Canterbury also reported heavy use of power last week-end as a southerly swept over the province. Tennis final, back page
