Rubbishmen on strike
Christchurch City Council rubbish collectors went on strike yesterday for the third time in the last six weeks. They will meet this morning to decide whether to return to work. The strike yesterday meant that rubbish normally collected on Mondays was left on the streets, while the Bexley tip was closed. A spokesman for the council advised residents to
take in their rubbish bags and put them out next Monday. An organiser of the Canterbury sub-branch of the Labourers’ Union, Mr G. R. Lomax, said that the labourers and drivers went on strike over a dispute about payments. The complaint was not about not getting pay for time lost during the strike last month. The workers argued that if because of industrial ac-
tion on one day they had to spend more time on the same day the next week picking up two lots of rubbish. they should be paid for the extra time spent. Instead, some of them had had their wages for last Thursday reduced, Mr Lomax said. He said that he was sure the issue could be resolved by negotiation. Talks with the council will continue today.
