Electricians defy union
PA Wellington Tasman Pulp and Paper Company electricians at Kawerau defied their union yesterday and joined a 24hour strike in support of the Federation of Labour’s $2O wage campaign. The New Zealand Electrical and Electronic Workers’ Union at its annual conference in Taupo in April ruled that its membership was not to support the F.O.L. campaign. Company plumbers were the only union group in Tasman’s 13-union structure to reject the strike call and work yesterday. The electricians’ national secretary, Mr A. J. Neary, said yesterday morning, that he was not aware of
the circumstances behind the Tasman unionists’ decision, and would make no comment in the meantime. Mr Neary said he would discuss the situation in Wellington today with the union’s Auckland secretary, Mr Jack Taylor. Caxton mill workers at Kawerau also went on strike for 24 hours yesterday in suport of the F.O.L. campaign. No company comment was available on the extent of the worker invovlement. In the Wellington region, about 200 Food Processing and Chemical Workers’ Union (soap workers) members started a 24-hour strike yesterday supporting the F.O.L. campaign.
