Smith on mend

Wayne Smith, the injured All Black first fiveeighths, is making good progress towards fitness with the fourth test in mind.

A torn groin muscle compelled Smith to retire from the rain-drenched Carisbrook pitch in the thirtyseventh minute of the rugby test against the Lions on Saturday. He is receiving intensive treatment to clear up the damage, and the physiotherapist, Mr Brian McKenzie, is hopeful that Smith will be running again by this week-end. The fourth test will be played at Auckland on July 16.

“I slipped on the wet ground and got caught in a splits situation as other players went over me,” Smith said yesterday. “But I

am not in too much discomfort, and it is the type of injury which should clear up quickly.”
