Moves to widen Electrical Act

PA Hamilton A conference of interested parties will be set up by the Ministry of Energy to discuss moves to legislate for handypersons to do more of their own electrical work. The secretary of the Electrical Workers’ Union, Mr A. J. Neary, who met the Minster of Energy, Mr Birch, to discuss possible changes to the Electrical Registration Act, said from Wellington that he believed nothing would be done hastily, and

that anything that was to be done “would be well thought out.”

• The conference would take some time to arrange, Mr Neary said, but Energy Ministry officials had been asked to proceed with it. “I do not think it is the intention of the Minister to do anything precipitious that would encourage people to do unauthorised electrical work. He is very conscious about electrical safety,” Mr Neary said.
