New Tasman ship planned
The Shipping Corporation has decided in principle to put a second ship on the Tasman freight run in tandem with the Australian National Line. However, the decision depends on negotiations with maritime unions on an accept-
able manning scale, and the purchase of a suitable ship says the corporation’s chairman, Mr Harry Julian. The Shipping Corporation-A. N. L. service began in March with the converted coastal ship Darwin Trader supplied by A.N.L. She calls at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin, as well as Sydney and Melbourne. The Darwin Trader is next due at Lyttelton on July 14. Mr Julian said that if all went well the new ship could be the run later this year or early next year. Several ships had been selected as potential buys, and had been inspected by officials from maritime unions. The new vessel will compete with Union Shipping Group vessels on the Tasman run.
