Big savings from CEO
A new Australian user of a Data General comprehensive electronic office system (CEO) expects to save about ?Aust62,ooo a year on the cost of telephone and telex use, stationery, and mail. The user, Hilti (Aust.) Pty, Ltd, also expects the CEO installation to lead to an increase in office productivity because of improved efficiency in communications and administration.
Hilti (Aust.), of Lidcombe, New South Wales, is a subsidiary of Hilti A.G., a multinational with its headquarters in the principality of Liechtenstein. It manufactures fastening systems, industrial drills, and explo-sive-powered fastening tools for the construction industry.
The company has acquired a Data General CS/ 2008 computer system with CEO application software and other application software, valued in all at about ?Aust32o,ooo.
Hilti needed to replace a six-year-old Univac V 77 and to acquire a system which could improve interstate communications.
The company has 24 sales outlets in Australia, including its main branches in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, and processes about 6000 orders a month for 3000 different products. The Data General system was chosen after an evaluation was made of ten different electronic office systems.
Mr Bennet Sun, Hilti’s Manager, Logistics and Information Systems, said Hilti found the CEO package to be more fully integrated and more comprehensive than its competitors. It also offered clearer and better-laid-out screen displays. The CEO software package consists of electronic mail and filing, word processing, spelling, information management and graphics. Hilti took delivery of the computer in January this year, spent two months testing the software, and “went live” in April.
Each interstate branch will be equipped with a visual display unit and a printer linked to the head office installation.
Mr Sun said the major component of CEO for Hilti was the electronic mail and filing which would probably save $22,000 a year in toll calls alone. Mr Sun said that because CEO emulated the existing office process, the staff found no problems in adapting to the new system.
