S.A. invitation
PA Wellington The Prime Minister, Mr Muldoon, said yesterday he had declined an invitation from the South African Rugby Board to send a Government representative to an international congress for the news media next month. Mr Muldoon declined to say why, replying to reporters, “Use ypur own intelligence.”
Mr Muldoon described as curious a telegram he received from the Com-
monwealth Secretary-Gen-eral, Sir Shridath Ramphal, welcoming Chris Lewis’s Wimbledon tennis semi-final victory over the South African, Kevin Curren. Sir Shridath had sent a telegram “congratulating New Zealand and the Commonwealth on a magnificent win,” Mr Muldoon said.
It was a “rather curious attitude,” he said. It seemed to be “all right to play South Africans so long as you win,” Mr Muldoon said.
