Grant to Unemployed Workers’ Union
Sir,—l object to the way in which Labour City Councillors appropriated some of my rates money for spending on the Unemployed Workers’ Union centre. My front fence needs painting. I am too old to do it easily myself, and to my way of thinking that rate money could'have been used to pay a youngster to do the job, thereby giving him more confidence in himself, an honest day’s pay, and every likelihood of more work from my neighbours if the job was well done. — Yours, etc., S. MATTHEWS (Mrs). June 28, 1983. Sir,— I was quite horrified to learn that part of my rates will go to support the Unemployed Workers’ Union. Who gave the council the right to allocate $12,000 this year and another $12,000 next year to this organisation. If they need help and support then they should make themselves employable. — Yours, etc., J. STEAD. June 28, 1983.
