Overseas meat markets
Demand for New Zealand lamb declined in the United Kingdom last week as domestic product moved towards its peak production period, reports the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in its weekly market survey. On the Smithfield market PL grade was quoted at 58.8-60 p per lb, and PM grade at 58-59 p per lb. Weakening of the market continued for imported manufacturing beef in the United States. New Zealand boneless bull beef dropped one cent during the week to average 114 U.S. cents per lb, c.i.f.,
as did cow beef which averaged 105 U.S. cents per lb, c.i.f.
The market for New Zealand mutton was quiet last week in Japan as a result of offers of lower priced product from Australia. Australian carcase mutton was offered at as low as 41 U.S. cents per lb c. and f., but recovered to 43-46 U.S. cents per lb c. and f., depending on parcel size and delivery period. These prices are well below the board’s levels, with MLI carcases currently quoted at 52 U.S. cents per lb c. and f., for MM grade.
