Twizel date agreed

Geraldine reporter The Mackenzie County Council has agreed to the Twizel provisional transfer date of June 1, 1984, but it will also press for a development zone to be set aside. The Government had offered the town, and a $150,000 grant, to the council. On the transfer date, the council will assume control of Twizel. At a council meeting, Cr D. E. Dann said that there was a need for a development zone to cater for small rural-type industries. Cr C. A. Gallagher said that Twizel is still likely to be more important to the Upper Waitaki than Oamarama if a decision for its retention is made within six months. The Government has offered the council 325 houses. However, it still does not know exactly what houses will be available.

It is hoped by next meeting to approve a scheme for testing the market for houses in Twizel. New resort?

Council representatives are to meet the Mackenzie Development Company to discuss the company’s plans for a multi-million dollar resort in the Twizel area.

The objective of the development company is to establish a ski area of international standard in the Duncan basin of the Ben Ohau Range. The company believes that Twizel is an important part of its proposal as the town would provide base accommodation and service facilities.

It is anticipated that $l5 to $2O million will be spent on the scheme in the first five years by the development company.
