Watson leads

John Watson in Motorgard II has a commanding 7min 59.0 s lead after the first race in the three race jet boat series for the Savage Marine Trophy. The first race was held on the Rakaia River at the weekend and the second race will be on the Waiau River on Saturday. The battle for the minor places is close. Warren Meredith is comfortably placed in second position, but less than six minutes covers the next four drivers — Alan Lees, Pat Quinn, Ralph Brown and Ross Murdoch. The series is being used by the drivers to prepare for the world championship to be held in New Zealand in September
