Cold, wet conditions

The field for the Wools-ton-General Lee hills open cycling event was drastically reduced by the cold and wet conditions on Saturday. Peter Davies, starting from the 19min mark, was the first through Lyttelton, and by the time the riders reached the Black Tulip was five minutes ahead of a fast-closing bunch of eight riders, including the scratch pair of Brian Fowler and Toni Horne. At Tai Tapu it appeared the fast bunch would fill all the placings but Davies produced a brilliant solo effort to hold on and win by the merest of margins — five seconds. In the sprint Fowler managed to hold off Horne for second place. Abbreviations used in the results are: Hornby (H.), Papanui (P.), Woolston (W.). Open. — P. Davies (H.), handicap 19mins, 1:54:16, 1; B. Fowler (W.), scr, 1:35.1, 2; T. Horne, (P.), scr, 1:35:21.05, 3. Fastest time: Fowler, 1; Horne, 2. Fastest junior: A. Launder (Nelson). Novice B grade (Bkm). — M. Crosbie, 455, 1; P. O’Hagan, 455, 2; A. Laplanche, 455, 3. Time: 14:44. Fastest time: J. Smith and Crosbie, 14:44 (equal) 1. Novice A grade (16km). — A. Terris, 6min, 1; S. Thompson, 2; P. Laughton, 3. Time: 30:09. Fastest time: I. Curd. 22.08.
