United reaches last eight in cup

DAVID LEGGAT
Having enjoyed a vast advantage in possession, Christchurch Mogal United eventually turned it into goals to advance to the quarter-finals of the Adidas Chatham Cup, beating Dunedin Technical, 3-2, at English Park yesterday. But although United always looked much the better side it was far from oneway traffic. Dunedin Technical led at half-time and gathered together enough of the scraps to trouble United’s defence. However, it was never really going to be enough and finally the dam, which had withstood a constant barrage of assaults, burst, and once behind, Dunedin Technical did not have the fire power to come back from two goals down.
With Keith Braithwaite and Allan Boath having
good games in the midfield, United had many chances to wrap up the match before finally doing so, with a three-goal burst in 15 minutes, midway through the second half.
Even then, United relaxed and conceded a second goal shortly before the end. Barry White, another who put himself about and found room to move freely among United’s defence, put Dunedin Technical ahead, in the twentieth minute.
Ken Drakeford’s right wing cross was punched out by Frank van Hattum, but only as far as White. The bearded striker made no mistake. Van Hattum suffered a groin strain, and was replaced at half-time, by United’s reserve goalkeeper, Mike Fulham. United’s persistent pressure finally paid off in the 56th minute, and opened the
floodgates. Braithwaite put Verweij through and the tall international finished it capably from 15 metres. Seven minutes later, Paul Wilkinson headed Boath’s in-swinging corner past Birch from close range, and Braithwaite added the third 19 minutes from the end. Hill’s header reached Braithwaite and the midfielder had time to pick his spot from eight metres.
Woolston W.M.C. was eliminated from the Cup when it went down, 0-3, to Dunedin City in Dunedin yesterday. It conceded a goal as early as the second minute, and was two behind at the interval. Woolston did score in the second half, but it was disallowed for an earlier infringement. The defeat at least means Woolston can devote all its energies to the hertz League title race.
For the first time in the national league’s 13-year history, all eight quarterfinalists in the Cup are league sides. Two of them, Napier City Rovers and Hanimex-North Shore were taken to extra time, while another, McKee Nelson United, was eliminated by National Mutual Miramar.
Napier’s hero was the former international goalkeeper, Sandy Davie. His penalty saves won the match for Napier against the central league division two side, Rose City.
Napier equalised 30 seconds before the end of normal time, then again shortly before the finish of extra time.
North Shore’s coach, Don Jones, dropped three of his players, Peter Henry, Martin Jennison and Gordon Brown, for disciplinary
reasons, and the situation looked grim as it trailed the northern league third division side, Mount Manganui, 0-1.
Mount Maunganui scored again in extra time, before North Shore made certain of the win with two further goals. Mount Wellington, Manurewa and Gisborne City experienced no such difficulties, all winning at home. Results: 1 Christchurch Mogal United 3 (Johann Verweij, Paul Wilkinson, Keith Braithwaite), Dunedin Technical 2 (Barry White, John Moodie). Halftime 0-1. McKee Nelson United 1 (Charlie Juffs), National Mutual Miramar 3 (own goal, Mick Howard penalty, Mike Simenoff). Half-time 1-1. Napier City Rovers 2 (Paul Halford, Kevin Rose
