Southland rampant

PA Invercargill Southland made an emphatic start to its 1983 South island second division rugby campaign when it trounced North Otago, 55-0, on a puggy Rugby Park in Invercargill yesterday. Southland ran in 10 tries, beating its previous national championship record of nine in a match against Buller last year. North Otago proved weak opposition and was unable to secure enough good ball

to deprive Southland of its chances. The first five-eighths, Brian McKechnie, with six conversions and a dropped goal, became the first player to score 500 points for Southland.
