Dittman No. 1 rider for Smith stable

NZPA-Reuter Brisbane Mick Dittman’s decision to accept Tommy Smith’s offer as his No. 1 stable jockey could interfere with his riding commitments on the champion colt, Strawberry Road. Dittman, who will join up with Smith from the start of the new racing season on August 1, said he still hopes to keep his association with Brisbane’s Strawberry Road if at all possible in the rich spring Melbourne races — they have already won the Rosehill Guineas, the A.J.C. Derby and the Queensland Derby. “It will probably turn out

that there will be riding clashes with Smith horses when they come up against Strawberry Road, but I will have to cross that bridge when I come to it,” Dittman said. The 31-year-old jockey, who admits he has gone as far as he can go in Brisbane racing circles, decided that Smith’s lucrative offer was too good to refuse as it will give him the best jockey’s position in Australia. Dittman takes over the No. 1 Smith riding position from Malcolm Johnston, who left the stable last May to take up an overseas riding contract.
