Eclipse Stakes to Solford

NZPA-Reuter Sandown, England The champion Irish jockey, Pat Eddery, rode the American-bred colt. Solford, to victory in a thrilling finish to the £134,745 ($NZ318,000) Eclipse Stakes at Sandown on Saturday. Eddery sent Mr Robert Sangster’s colt to the front well over a furlong out after Lafontaine had made the running from his stable companion, Lobkowiez. In a desperately close finish to the mile and a quarter race, Solford won by a head from Lester Pig-

gott’s mount, Muscatite, with Greville Starkey’s mount Tolomeo, a head back third. Stanerra, the 11 to 4 favourite, was a neck away fourth, ending a sequence of group race victories. It was the fourth Eclipse Stakes triumph for the Irish triner, Vincent O’Brien, and a second for Eddery. The win was worth £81,718 ($NZ192,850) to Mr Sangster.

Solford, starting at 3 to 1; was the first Irish-trained horse to win the Eclipse since Dickins in 1979.
