Wilson equals try record
Stu Wilson, the All Black right wing, was overjoyed at scoring his side’s try in the rugby test at Carisbrook on Saturday, because it enabled him to equal lan Kirkpatrick’s record of most tries in test rugby by a New Zealander. Wilson’s effort came after a scoreless period last winter. Indeed he was overshadowed by the young Australian wing, David Campese. “I’ve waited a long time for this,” he said with feeling, a few hours after splashing down for his sixteenth test try on Saturday.
Half those tries were scored in 1981, which equalled a world record for most test tries in a calendar year. That followed another barren year, 1980, but Wilson has scored test tries in every other season since his debut in France in 1977. Eden Park, in Auckland, has been his most notable ground. He has scored six tries there, three at Lancaster Park, and two at Carisbrook, but, strangely enough, none on his home pitch, Athletic Park. Overseas, Wilson has scored twice in Paris and once each in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Toulouse.
