Referendums
Sir,—No human system is perfect; but all are capable of improvement, so referendums do have a place. We do not need to put up with New Zealand the way we have it when we can try something different. Mr Lange is not the answer. The front bench of leader’s favourites will still stifle talent. One able Minister too busy cleaning up his colleagues’ messes will be no threat to his leader. Except for a dash of Thatcher finance in the Labour stew, it is all so familiar. Mr Lange says we do not want a fair vote but no sign of testing his opinion is suggested. Like the Labour Party of the ’3os, which cut proportional representation from its policy, he puts party before principle. No wonder Brian
Priestley in “Fourth Estate” slated the Muldoon-Lange slanging match and the newspapers for treating it as news. The London “Financial Times” says we are a confused, divided and often bitter people. That is no surprise.—Yours, etc., A. M. COATES. June 29, 1983.
