Malawi poll

NZPA-Reuter Blantyre Polling in Malawi’s second General Election since independence almost 20 years ago has ended with a heavy turn-out of voters reported, but results are not due to be announced until next Sunday. Although counting was taking place immediately in urban areas such as the business centre of Blantyre, the legislative capital of Zomba and the administrative capital of Lilongwe, some ballot boxes had to travel from the bush and other remote areas in the impoverished southern African nation. Some 203 candidates who are fighting for 74 seats in Parliament will know their fate once the results have been placed before President for life, Dr Kamuzu Banda, under whom Parliament serves, and then published.
