Smoke levels high
The smoke level in inner suburban Christchurch more than doubled the World Health Organisation safety limit on Friday, June 24. On that day the smoke reading was 270 micrograms per cubic metre. The W.H.O. limit is 125 micrograms. The safety level for smoke has been exceeded on five days this winter in the inner suburban area, four days in the central city, two days in city streets, and one day in the outer suburban area. The sulphur dioxide levels have been exceeded twice this winter, both times in the outer suburban areas.
