Study of N.Z. life span

Men resident in Nelson Bays and Canterbury can expect on average to live 2% years longer than those living in the East Cape of the North Island or the West Coast of the South Island. This is one of the results of a research paper on regional mortality rates presented at the Demographic Society’s conference in Wellington recently. Mrs V. E. Elley, and Mr M. A. Khawaja, research officers in the Statistics Department Christchurch, found that mortality rates for 1980-82 showed that they were related to place of residence. They also found that women living in the Auckland, Thames Valley, Bay of Plenty, and Nelson Bays areas could expect to live an average of two years longer than their counterparts in East Cape, Tongariro, and the West Coast. The researchers gave no definite views on whether the regional differences were caused by demographic, socio-economic, or medical causes or a combination of all these.
