Opera singer offered a course
NZP A Sydney The New Zealand opera singer, Phillipa Reade, has been offered a place in the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music, as a consolation prize for her performance in the Marianne Mathy Scholarship. A spokesman said that the three-year course was worth $25,000, but it was not known if the Aucklandbased West Coaster, who is a pupil of Dame Sister Mary Leo, would take up the offer. Ms Reade was given a place in the semi-finals of Australia’s premier classical singing contest after the withdrawal of the original New Zealand entrant, Wayne Morris.
Mr Morris won his place as runner-up in the Dame Sister Mary Leo Scholarship in Auckland earlier this year, and when he had to withdraw, Ms Reade, who was second runner-up, was given his place after the Australian organisers heard a tape recording of her singing. Ms Reade did not reach the six finalist places last week, but was judged to be the best of the other nine semi-finalists. Because of her performance and all the finalists had either completed the conservatorium courses or were above that standard, the place was offered to her.
