Tough hockey draw for N.Z.

New Zealand will have the toughest possible introduction to the Champions Trophy hockey tournament in Karachi on October 28. It will play the world champion, Pakistan, in the main game of the day on the city’s new artificial surface. It will be a difficult initiation for the New Zealanders. The stadium is sure to be packed with thousands of fanatical fans. New Zealand’s second game the next day will be no easier. It is against Australia. New Zealand twice has games on successive days at the eight-day tournament, but so do three of the other five teams. New Zealand’s draw in fact is not too drastic, and Brian Maunsell, the coach, believes New
Zealand has fared well. “All the games at that tournament will be tough and we will have to take each one as it comes. We have to collect as many points as we can to finish fifth or better and try and ensure an invitation to the next Champions Trophy tournament. “Our aim will be to try and maintain the fourth ranking we earned at Melbourne last Decmeber. I would like New Zealand to have a ranking of third before the end of next year,” said Mr Maunsell. New Zealand’s full draw is: October 28: v. Pakistan. 29: v. Australia. 31: v. West Germany. November 1: v. The Netherlands. 3: v. India.
