The Psychiatric Department is centred on a 36-bed purpose built unit which provides a base for a community care psychiatric service, with over 1000 patients under active care in the community. WHOLE-TIME OR LOCUM PEDIATRICIAN Vacancy No. 16/06 (A) This is a specialist position and the appointee will be based at Southland Hospital, Kew, Invercargill. In addition to Hospital duties there is a close liaison with the Education Service and with the voluntary societies (Crippled Children Society, I.H.C. Society, Plunket Society, etc). It is proposed that there will be an equal division of all hospital duties with the present Pediatrician, apart from areas of special interest. SENIOR CASUALTY OFFICER Vacancy No. 16/18 The position is that of Senior Casualty and Admitting Officer at Southland Hospital, Kew, Invercargill. Duties include the examination and treatment of emergency cases in the Accident and Emergency Department. The appointee will also be required to screen acute admissions (including X-ray or laboratory investigation as well as clinical assessment) to ensure the best use of hospital beds. The Department has recently been extended to include a holding ward and additional facilities for dealing with major emergencies. The post calls for a Medical Practitioner with some years of experience, possibly including general practice as it is desirable to maintain good liaison with general practitioners in the catchment area. REGIONAL GERIATRICIAN Vacancy No. 16/19 (A) This position is on a full-time or 9/10ths basis and the appointee will be based at Southland Hospital, Kew. Applicants should preferably, but not essentially, have an appropriate higher qualification in Medicine with experience in the field of geriatrics. The appointee will be responsible for the supervision of geriatric services throughout the board’s area. At the base hospital the board has established an 18-bed geriatric assessment and rehabilitation unit and additional general beds may be made available for this purpose. The board also has geriatric beds at Lome Hospital (94 beds), Seddon Memorial Hospital, Gore (24 beds), and Riverton Hospital (73 beds). A new geriatric assessment and rehabilitation unit (40 beds) is in the process of construction at Southland Hospital and will be completed in 1984. Southland Hospital, Kew, has 450 beds with the hospital serving as a base hospital for the Southland region which has a population of 120,000, half of which is centred around the city of Invercargill. Invercargill is a progressive city, with a well organised and wide range of cultural and educational activities. Southland, a prosperous farming community, has an equable climate free from extremes, with a mean daily temperature in summer of 18deg.C. It is renowned for the diversity of sporting activities available - angling of all types, especially salmon, brown and rainbow trout; sea fishing; snow and water ski-ing, as well as organised sports such as rugby, football, cricket, athletics, cycling and archery. The conditions of employment and salary scales are in accordance with Hospital Service Determination No. M.lO (Medical Officers). The salary range for specialist positions If $NZ35,121 to $NZ45,213 depending upon qualifications and experience with the opportunity on application for a salary up to $NZ59,509. The salary range for non-specialist senior medical positions Is $NZ24,286 to $NZ42,717 depending upon qualifications and experience.
