Many injuries at gymnastics festival

NZPA Frankfurt West Germany’s gymnasts are bouncing, swinging and tumbling into hospital. The first day of a gymnastics festival in Frankfurt

produced 235 injuries, with 73 participants taken to hospital, Red Cross officials said. Most of the injured were young girls with joint and muscle injuries, but one woman organiser was

carried off suffering from exhaustion and a man, aged 69, had a heart attack while taking part in exercises. A Red Cross spokesman at the festival, Mr Michael Fischer, said: “My 69 members are absolutely washed

out. Many trainers have no regard for health—they are totally irresponsible.” The festival is for all ages and standards, and with 65,000 participants is the largest in West Germany for 40 years.
