S.A. players at Wimbledon brings protest by Zimbabwe
NZPA Harare Zimbabwe’s “Herald” newspaper has criticised Britain for allowing South Africans to play in the Wimbledon tennis championships. It said in an editorial, that Britain’s decision undermined a United Nations ban on South Africa from international
sport. The newspaper said: “Britain has made a mockery of the United Nations blacklist by allowing South Africans to play at Wimbledon. Success’ by South Africans in the world arena will give credence to the cosmetic changes that are being made to the sporting system in the republic.”
The “Herald” called on the West to follow what it termed France’s lead in Europe by banning sporting contacts with Pretoria, whose apartheid policy is widely condemned. “The job of isolating South African racists has been left mainly to Africa and the West Indies,” it said.
