Fears of ship’s lay-up

The Shipping Corporation may have to lay up or sell its vessel the New Zealand Caribbean, says the corporation’s chairman, Mr Harry Julian. The Meat Board has imposed on the corporation a limit of 500 containers to the North American market, and this quota has been almost filled. Mr Julian said the line faced a lean six months of trading in the Caribbean without future meat supplies. The corporation could not find alternative cargoes or routes and had been forced to look at the cost of laying up, or even selling, the New Zealand Caribbean should it fail to gain extra meat cargoes. The corporation carries meat for 5 per cent less than the Conference line ships which carry the bulk of the trade. However, Mr Julian said negotiations were continuing with the Meat Board to lift the 500-container limit. This has been complicated by a cut-rate offer from the Belgian ABC Container Line, which he described as unrealistic. He accused the Belgian line of buying its way into a trading route which already suffered from overtonnage. ARRIVALS Nil. DEPARTURES Nil. EXPECTED ARRIVALS Orkanger, Taur, today (7.30 a.m.).
