BHP closes 18c higher

NZPA Sydney A strong afternoon run by BHP provided the only action in a very slow day of trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday, the start of the new financial year. BHP closed 18c up at 840 and CSR added 7c to 390. The all-ordinaries index closed 0.3 points up at 605.4, with the all-industrials 1.7 points down at 740.6, and

the all-resources index 1.9 points higher at 496.2. The Santos bid for its Cooper Basin partners, Reef Oil and Basin Oil, attracted little attention, with 6400 Reef trading nationally at 170, a rise of 15c. Only 400 Basin changed hands in Sydney at 220, 5c up. About 93 per cent of each company is controlled by the National Mutual-T and G Insurance group and BT Australia after their recent joint-takeover bid. Santos closed 4c down at 676. Crusader Oil added 20c to 650, and its partner in the successful Basker One well in Bass Strait, Mincorp added 1c to 14c on national turnover of 710,000 shares.
