Safety in the mountains
Mountain Safety. By E. W. Crumpton. Published by the Author, 1983. 68 pp. $7.95 Eric Crumpton, of Christchurch, a veteran tramper. and climber, has produced a well-intentioned book that, unfortunately, falls short of being as useful as it could have been. The author is concerned about the number of lives lost in the New Zealand bush and high country and in this book he offers his experience and knowledge for the benefit of others. Much of what he has to say is sound common sense, sometimes illustrated with anecdotes from his own experiences. The book would have been more useful if the author had decided whether his object was to help those venturing into the bush and mountains for the first few times, or those who already have a good deal of experience. Experienced trampers and climbers are not likely to be very interested in his views on suitable clothing or how to load a pack — they will have their own pet gear and methods. On the other hand, a list of what food to take, and suggested menus, is not much help to beginners when little indication is given about how to prepare the food. "Become an expert at making scones, pancakes and stews” writes Mr Crumpton. A few recipes at that point, would do no harm. This might seem like carping criticism against a useful book, but better booklets on the same subject exist. Still, author Crumpton deserves praise for his evident concern for safety.
