Oamaru’s seat of justice

A History of the Oamaru Courthouse, 1883-1983. By Anthony Scott. Researched by Judith Nichol. Justice Department, 1983. 50 pp., illustrations. $2. When camera-wielding Japanese tourists stay overnight in Oamaru’s Brydone Hotel, the first thing photographed is often the Courthouse, just across the road from the hotel. The Oamaru-stone building, built in the Roman Corinthian style, is one of the grandest structures in a town admired for its architecturally satisfying buildings. It is appropriate that on the 100th anniversary of the completion of the . Courthouse a booklet has been produced, the theme being the relationship between the court and the community it serves. Unfortunately, the brief histories of legal men and anecdotes about the criminals they represented will do little more than whet the reader’s appetite. — Allan Gardyne.
