Car advertising

Sir,—The offensive Toyota TV commercial for their new car Starlet degrades women as sex objects that equate with consumer goodies one can "use” and “control” and is obviously aimed at the male half of the population. That this violently sexist advertisement should be regarded as acceptable by TVNZ and the women of this country is extraordinary. It is exactly this kind of revolting image, often taken to a further degree of explicitness in “girlie” magazines which encourages a sick attitude towards women and which permeates society in a subtle and insidious way. The result of this we see in the horrible increase in violence towards women in this society where for all the small advances chauvinism is still comfortably and complacently entrenched. Certainly, as a result of this commercial, the Starlet is absolutely the last car I would buy. I suspect a large number of the female population would react similarly.—Yours, etc., IMOGEN TRAVERS.
