Rugby crowd
Sir,—lt moved me deeply to hear the extent of the booing in the final seconds of the CanterburyLions rugby match as Hugo MacNeill was lining up his unsuccessful conversion attempt. My uncle, James Parker, a former Canterbury and 1924 All Black loose forward, would have turned in his grave had he heard the noise. As a Christchurch-bred and South Island born sports buff, I feel for the Canterbury team which must have wished for a grand victory — and got it — without the undignified jeering. If only those around the ground had displayed the sportsmanship personified by most of the players, such as the Deans brothers, whose famous forbears would also have disliked the attitude of a section of the Canterbury crowd.—Yours, etc., CHRISTOPHER MICHAEL BROOK. Whangarei, June 28, 1983.
