Nuclear weapons
Sir,—Our Minister of Defence, Mr Thomson, is on record as claiming that the new MX missile is necessary for rebuilding the major United States deterrent to nuclear war. Yet the MX, which will be the world’s most accurate missile, is designed for a first strike on Russian missile silos. This has nothing to do with deterrence but everything to do with nuclear war-fighting. The Minister also expresses criticism of continued French testing and cites the opinions of those who think the neutron bomb, also possessed by America, lowers the threshold for nuclear war. But, of course, the MX lowers this threshold, too. Indeed, this is why the peace movement is protesting the whole new generation of nuclear warfighting weaponry, including cruise, Trident, and the SS-20. — Yours, etc. D. K. SMALL. June 28, 1983.
